The annual ‘Cuckoo Walks’ took place on Saturday 30th April. There had been a wet week and even snow on the Friday, and I had begun to think that our luck had run out on what was to be the 13th walks’ day ! Once again however, we were truly blessed when a dry and lovely sunny day arrived. There were 200 walkers in total and as usual the 6 and 9 mile routes proved the most popular distances. It was especially pleasing to see family groups with some 30 children and at least three babies carried in slings and back packs on the 3 and 6 mile routes. The 12 mile route had 25 walkers but no youngsters this year.
There was a team of 16 or so helpers (including stewards, bookers – in, walk leaders and sweepers, and refreshment stop staff), who were very important in ensuring the success of the event and I would like to thank them for all their support and assistance on the day and in the run up to the walks too. I am very gratefull to and thank the catering ladies, particularly Susan, who once more plannned and served excellent refreshments for the ‘brew stops’ and in the Hall where all the walkers returned to a hot lunch. Thank you to everyone who made such a wide selection of cakes, pies and other desserts for this too.
There was also a very well supported raffle, for which tickets are sold before the walkers set out, which in itself raised £327. Thanks are due to Eileen and team, for running this and to everyone who provided the excellent prizes to make it so successful.
As well as having a very enjoyable day in good weather, we were also able to make a substantial profit (including the proceeds fromt the raffle) and I am pleased to report that we expect to be able to donate around £450 each to Brindle St James’ ‘Windows’ Restoration Appeal’ and St Catherine’s Hospice. Thank you to everyone who participated in any way for your generous support.
The walks are an extremely friendly and happy community event which are much valued and appreciated by all who attend. Walkers return year after year and it was great to see so may new faces and family groups this year. If you werent able to attend this time I recommend them to you and hope that you might like to join us in April 2017.
