The 12th annual Cuckoo Walks took place on 18th April and once again we were blessed with good weather. There was glorious sunshine and a cool breeze which made for ideal walking conditions. There were 188 walkers in total and as usual the 6 and 9 mile routes proved the most popular distances. There were over 40 people on the 3 mile route including several family groups with youngsters and at least three babies carried in back packs! The 12 mile route (covering 12.7 miles) had 24 walkers and included a nine year old girl who arrived back first!
There was a team of 16 or so helpers (including stewards, registrars, walk leaders and sweepers, and refreshment stop staff), who were very important in ensuring the success of the event and I would like to thank them for all their support and assistance on the day and in the run up to the walks too. I am very grateful to and thank the catering ladies, particularly Susan and Stephanie, who once more planned and delivered excellent refreshments for the ‘brew stops’ and in the Hall where all the walkers returned to a hot lunch. Thank you to everyone who made such a wide selection of cakes, pies and other desserts.
There was also a very well supported raffle, for which tickets are sold before the walkers set out, which in itself raised £320. Thanks are due to Eileen and team, for running this and to everyone who provided the excellent prizes to make it so successful.
As well as having a very enjoyable day in great weather, we were also able to make a substantial profit (including the proceeds from the raffle) and I am pleased to report that we expect to be able to donate around £500 each (figure at time of writing to be confirmed) to the Gregson Green Development appeal and towards the purchase of the first defibrillator for the village centre. So thank you to everyone who participated in any way for your generous support.
The walks are an extremely friendly and happy community event which are much valued and appreciated by all who attend and walkers return year after year. If you weren’t able to attend this time I commend them to you and hope that you might like to join us next year. We’ll look forward to seeing you in April 2016.
